This is a book about the future. It deals with the development of the wireless communications industry and technology during the coming 10-15 years. This is indeed an exciting field with a great potential for changing society and the way we live and work. The communications industry is clearly one of the largest and most important industries in the world. Markets and companies are truly global and millions of people get their livelihood from working as operators, vendors, service providers, application developers, content owners, and suppliers of components, products, and services. We have seen an absolutely amazing growth in the use of information and communication technologies over the past decades. The explosive development of the internet is perhaps the most striking event during the latter half of the twentieth century. The development of wireless technology and the very rapid growth in use of mobile telephony are almost as important. Today there are more mobile telephone subscriptions in the world than there are fixed lines. A short time ago, the number of mobile phone users passed 1 billion. The internet and the mobile phone are now integral parts of our lives. It seems as if human beings have an insatiable need to communicate with each other. Perhaps communication is one of the things that make us human.
