ISPAK Urges Not to Pay USF and ICT R&D Fund

Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAK) is seeking a facility for all the stakeholders to not to pay their contribution for Information Communication Technologies (ICT) Research and Development (R&D) Fund and Universal Service Fund (USF) due to government’s inaction in resolving the issues of these two funds.

In a news item produced in ‘The News’, it said that ISPAK has written a letter to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), ISPAK has demanded that since last six months, government has miserably failed to resolve the serious issues being faced by both funds and any further contributions by the telecom operators should be stopped till both organizations are back on the track.

Microsoft Contributes $ 1.3 Mln for the Flood Victims

Microsoft Pakistan is working closely with different NGOs and Government bodies in Pakistan as part of the rescue and prevention effort now underway.

In this regard Microsoft announced a relief package consisting of $ 700,000 cash-donation, deployment of disaster management software for the Govt. of Punjab at no cost, urgent food supplies to the flood victims in KPK province and software donations to various NGOs currently involved in relief activities.

Wateen Beats Forecasts, Posts Loss After Tax

In the annual report published this week; Wateen posted Rs 1,994 million as after tax loss in the year ended June 30, 2010 (FY10) as compared to profit after tax of Rs 927.763 million in the corresponding period in FY09.

Forecasts had initially projected a loss of Rs. 2,071 million for the same period.

Microsoft Signs Education Alliance Pact with HEC

To achieve these objectives in Pakistan, Microsoft Pakistan has entered into an Education Alliance Agreement with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to.

Nokia Launches its Recycle Program – a Customer’s Social Responsibility

Pakistan has become 86th country in the world where Nokia has launched its recycling program, through a press event in Karachi.

“Take Back” program will have recycle boxes at all 9 Nokia Care centers across the country. Along with, there would be 400+ collection points and a mobile van in Karachi to serve urban mobile market.
The initiative is launched to invite the mobile phone users to recycle their old phones.
Nokia isn’t accepting only Nokia made models, but also Samsung, Siemens and other makes are also encouraged to be dropped into Recycle Boxes.

“Huawei International Pte Limited and Huawei Technologies Pakistan Pvt Limited on 23 August 2010 instituted three petitions in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, for the winding up of Warid Telecom (Pvt.) Fraud of the Year: Minting Money by Acquiring Land for Towers

Today we saw the heights of deceptive activities going on in our society, when an individual named Aftab Ahmed, so called director projects of a new cellular company, published an advert in Daily Express, Lahore – asking the general public to offer their commercial and non-commercial lands for tower installation.

This guy, when called, claims that a new cellular company is starting its services in Pakistan and needs space for tower installations in cities including: Lahore, Okara, Depalpur, Burewala and Sahiwal.

PTA Reports Massive Violations by Telcos in Selling SIMs

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority conducted a survey/ inspection to monitor sale of pre-active SIMs to check if cellular companies are selling SIMs in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) defined by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority or not, told us sources familiar with the matter.

Survey results, which are exclusively made available to ProPakistani, revealed that all cellular companies are violating SOP in selling postpaid SIMs, while Mobilink topped the race with 7 out of 9 Customer Service Centers and 18 out of 26 franchises have been found guilty of selling SIMs without fulfilling the described procedures.

PTA to Start Awareness Campaign on Balance Transfer Frauds

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is planning to launch an awareness campaign for mobile subscribers to educate them on illegal balance transfer (mobile credit) asked by fallacious individuals against a lottery prizes, reported us people aware of the situation.

It is often seen that mobile phone subscribers receive SMS or even calls telling them about a lottery prize of 5 lakh or so. Callers ask mobile users to transfer balance (mobile credit) in order to avail the lottery prize.
PTA intends to aware mobile phone subscribers that no cellular company will ask them for any kind of balance transfers against any lottery prize.

Insight of VimpleCom / Orascom Merger

In the history of Telecom, a merger agreement between VimpleCom of Russia and Weather Investments was signed today as per a joint statement issued by both the groups, resulting into world’s fifth largest mobile telecommunications carrier by subscribers with pro forma net operating revenues of US$ 21.5 billion and pro forma EBITDA of US$ 9.5 billion for the year ended 31 December, 2009.

Russia’s VimpelCom Confirms Merger with Orascom [Updated]

Russia’s VimpleCom has reportedly offered a lucrative sum, said to be as high as USD 6.8 billion, to Naguib Sawiris to get hold of controlling stakes in Orascom Telecom.

Reports say that possible deal may end up in a merger or both telecom companies, in addition, VimpleCom will acquire 51 percent controlling stakes in Orascom.

This is Naguib’s second attempt in this quarter to sell off Orascom’s shares. Earlier, deal with MTN couldn’t close due to disputed fate of Djezzy, group’s highest revenue generating arm in Algeria.

Seminar on ‘Connected World’ Held
